Can a C-7 contractor use a plastic single gang box on a 100 degree fire wall.? I have to install a wireless transmitting raputer( battery operated ) on a new construction site. The general is not sure if the inspector will except the (standard single gang) pastic box on a 100 degree fire rated wall that leads into the corridor. We have never had any problems in the past but could anyone shed a little light on this matter yes this is low voltage

MARTIN replied: "Maybe."

shadoburn replied: "its low voltage, yes"

Ray D replied: "If it's a residential application yes, If commercial No"

Inspector Homes replied: "Any electrical box needs to have a fire rating before it can be in a rated wall. There are plastic boxes that carry that rating. Look for a stamp on the box. Without that rating, the inspector should fail the inspection if he/she notices it. You find out how important these ratings are if you ever have a fire and the investigators see how the fire spread from room to room. The rated corridor is supposed to buy you time to escape during a fire. Do not compromise that rating. Plan on doing it right whether or not the inspector catches it."

Are cases of single use bottled water left out in the heat anywhere before we buy them in stores? Single use bottled water with a PET or PETE on the bottom of the bottles has been found to leach toxic chemicals from the plastic into the water if the bottles are left in the sun or heat or if they are more than six months old. We can monitor this at home but how do we know whether or not they have been left on a dock or somewhere else, for any length of time in the heat before they reach the stores?

justme replied: "We don't. And most warehouses get pretty hot."

gpibambam replied: "i dont think we can monitor this. if you call and ask a store manager theyll probably tell you it wasnt left in the sun regardless of whether or not it was, if you contact corporate they probably dont have a clue. im sure theyre left in the sun for a little bit when theyre unloading.. but once theyre in the store theyre either in the back (where its relatively cool) or on the shelves (which are generally near the frozen goods and in a grocery store so... relatively cool as well) as long as youre shopping at safeway or lucky (albertsons) or maybe raley's i dont think you have anything to worry about."

What are those single plastic white earpieces that secret service officers wear? Are they just earhphones? What are they connected to and where can a person get them?

drb1256 replied: "They are earphones but they also pick up speech by way of the ear canal just like blue tooth. I think radio shack has a cheap version but police supply companies have a variety. gtdist.com galls.com botach.com"

CGIV76 replied: "They're just earphones used for listening, and they're connected to a transmitter."

D squared replied: "They are earpieces with a transmitter microphone that you talk into. The earpiece allows you to hear, the microphone allows to speak with someone else. It connects to a radio (walkie talkie) worn on your belt. They are used for privacy reasons and for when you are in a loud place like a ballroom, large crowd etc. I hated using those things as they really don't work that well, and after a short while your ear starts to hurt. Anyone may purchase one usually at a Police supply store such as Galls. Mine was department issue, still have it. Don't like to use it though."

TxTopCop replied: "They call them 'single plastic white earpeices'... Actually, they are connected to other agents and to a dispatcher. They are transmitters and receivers all self contained."

Once I open a vial of single use peservative free/sterile eye drops, how long are they safe to use? I use "Thera Tears" lubricate eye drops in single use vials. However, each vial will provide about 15 drops of which I only add to each eye a couple drops per day. They have a resealable plastic push on cap which is tight, but maybe not 100% air tight. Is is safe to use this vial 3-4 days?

alternative measures replied: "My sisters Eye Doc says 24 hrs. Have you ever tried Samilason eyes drops."

JT replied: "I wouldn't go 3-4 days - maybe 1 day. The reason those vials are intended for single use is that they don't contain preservatives that kill bacteria. You definitely don't want anything to start growing in there and then put it in your eye."

How does single-stream recycling work? I'm curious how aluminum is separated from paper and plastic in single-stream recycling plants but haven't been able to locate any info. Any recycling brainiacs out there? Specifically, how is ALUMINUM separated from everything else? Please, get technical. I have a bet with my boss. :)

JL replied: "Hi there, Everything is put in a single bin, at the plant items are either separated by machine or by human. There are a number of different sorting machines out there, some classify by weight, some by magnetism, the more advanced ones sort by shooting a laser at the product to determine what it is and divert it down a specialized conveyor belt with a burst of air or sometimes they are manually diverted. For the most part however sorting is done manually by either volunteers, the individuals picking up the recyclables (curb side) or back at the recycling plant. The recycling center that I volunteer at requires most items to be pre-classified before drop off, however the company that buys our pop cans and PETE (#1), and HDPE (#2) plastics accepts all of those items in a single large recycling container."
